What you'll learn

17 lessons, about 140 minutes in total. Watch at your own pace.

Module 1

Before you start

  • Is a CIC right for you? · 8 min

CIC, charity or limited company: what each allows, who funds which, and the honest trade-offs.

  • Shape an idea funders recognise · 8 min

Start small and specific, keep separate projects separate, and avoid the mistakes that sink first applications.

  • Choose your directors well · 6 min

How many you need, why they should be unrelated, roles, and handling conflicts of interest.

Module 2

Writing your application

  • Your name, objects and community interest statement · 10 min

What the CIC Regulator looks for in your CIC36, with worked examples - and your statement written for you.

  • The asset lock and your Articles in plain English · 7 min

What the asset lock means for you day to day, and what your Articles actually say.

Module 3

Registering with Companies House

  • Director identity verification, step by step · 6 min

The mandatory ID checks for every director and how to complete them before you file.

  • Filing your application: a live walkthrough · 12 min

Screen by screen through the online application, the fee, and what happens next.

Module 4

Getting set up

  • Opening a bank account for your CIC · 7 min

Which banks work for CICs, signatories, credit history and how long it really takes.

  • Insurance, DBS checks and safeguarding basics · 8 min

The cover you need, who actually needs which DBS check, and your safeguarding lead.

  • The policies funders ask for · 6 min

The six core policies, what each must cover, and keeping them up to date.

  • Data protection and the ICO fee, done properly · 6 min

Whether you need to pay the ICO fee, and handling personal data without the guesswork.

Module 5

Running it properly

  • Your annual cycle · 8 min

Confirmation statement, accounts and the CIC34 report: what is due when and how to get it right.

  • Paying yourself, legally · 10 min

Salary, invoicing and directors' pay: the rules, the disclosure, and the traps to avoid.

Module 6

Getting funded

  • Proving the need: real evidence from your community · 9 min

Short surveys and a free taster session that give you genuine quotes and numbers for applications.

  • Where CICs find funding, and a 90-day plan · 8 min

Local funders first, then the national programmes - with a plan to apply for several grants in three months.

  • National Lottery Awards for All, box by box · 15 min

Every question of the most common first grant for new CICs, up to £20,000, answered on screen.

  • Budgets, outcomes and what happens after the award · 10 min

Costing your project line by line, describing the difference it makes, and reporting back.
